The White House Swing: A Perfect Balance of Strength and Sweetness

The White House Swing: A Perfect Balance of Strength and Sweetness

Some books inspire deep reflection, some spark joy, and some… well, some make you want to shake up a cocktail and toast to the journey of becoming. Michelle Obama’s Becoming is one of those books—an honest, powerful memoir about growth, resilience, and finding your voice. And what better way to celebrate that spirit than with a drink just as vibrant and refreshing as the woman herself? Enter: The White House Swing.

This blog was made in collaboration with Now What? Not Another 20-Something's Podcast. Check out their website! If you want to read my thoughts on the memoir, it's posted on their blog!

When I finished reading “Becoming,” I felt myself evolve so to speak. A grain of salt had almost been handed to me, and to all the women that led to me: that it was okay. I learned to forgive myself for my own internalized misogyny that I’d held before and used against my mom. I learned to forgive her for hers. I learned to forgive myself for not being anything more than “in progress,” because that truly is all I should be expected to be. I learned to forgive my mother for being the same. The White House Swing

This drink is all about balance—strength and sweetness, elegance and boldness. With crisp Riesling, fresh mint, ripe strawberries, floral elderflower liqueur, and a touch of vodka for that extra kick, it’s a cocktail fit for a First Lady (or anyone who just wants to channel their inner powerhouse).

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz. Riesling (or any sweet white wine)
  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 1 oz elderflower liqueur
  • 2 strawberries, halved
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 1 mint sprig

Instructions:

  1. In a shaker filled with ice, put in the strawberries, mint, and lime juice.
  2. Add in Riesling, vodka, and elderflower liqueur.
  3. Shake and pour unstrained into a glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint and slice of lime for an extra touch of class.
  4. Sip and Enjoy!
